Re-designing this urban garden has been a wonderful experience working closely with the clients to allow for improved use and access, enhanced aesthetics, colourful planting, retaining seating areas and embracing seasonal variations.
Existing garden
The existing garden is bordered by a flint wall, the ground materials consist of a mixture
of paving sizes, gravel and red brick rectangular raised beds. A beautiful large olive tree is located near the current dining table, along with several large shrubs in pots, and unique ornaments and artefacts which the client wished to retain and use throughout the garden.
Garden walls
The intention was to redesign the garden to replace the raised red brick borders, with a more textural and aesthetic option, which would compliment the existing gravel and flint walls, as well as widening the border to allow for additional planting, zoning out the garden and adding in two new trees to add height and character to the space.
Before & After
Steps
The existing steps were definitely a trip hazard, as they were not set in equal height, as well as having a thing brick layer added to the top to retain the gravel which had been added. The intention was to re-build the steps along with all the low garden walls, to ensure they are of equal height and removing any risk of trips and falling.
Before & After
Central garden
The main garden area was intended to be retained as the main dining and seating area, as well as an area for the foldable washing line.
Bin storage
A bin storage area was to be included, however available space for this was quite restricted, especially with the majority of the garden as gravel, which is not ideal for pulling bins across and therefore they were to remain near the rear gate, but with the addition of a simple timber trellis to obscure the bins from views.
Before & After
Olive tree and dining table
The existing beautiful olive tree had a crumbling planter around the base, built with the same red bricks as the rest of the garden, this was to be re-constructed with the proposed walling stone, additional plants and colour being added here, as well as the repositioning of the clients existing sculptures into the planting.
Before & After
Sculptures and garden elements
The clients wished to retain and reposition their unique ornaments and artefacts throughout the garden, by repositioning them in interesting location within the planting.
